Si hay alguien que puede relatarnos con seriedad el estado de la vida en la Tierra, especialmente desde la perspectiva del calentamiento global, ese es Edward O. Wilson (*1929), uno de los mayores biólogos vivos, introductor de la palabra biodiversidad. Su libro La Creación: salvemos la vida en la Tierra (Kazt Editores 2007) es una llamada preocupada, diría que hasta desesperada para que hagamos esfuerzos ingentes y colectivos con el fin de salir de la crisis que nosotros mismos hemos creado. La Tierra, en su larga historia, conoció 5 grandes mortandades, la última al final de la era Mesozoica (la de los reptiles), have 65 millones de años, en la cual desparecieron todos los dinosaurios. Dio lugar a la era Cenozoica (la nuestra, la de los mamíferos). Entre una extinción y otra, la Tierra necesitó diez millones de años para autorregenerarse.
Según Wilson, en los últimos siglos, los seres humanos, en su afán de procurarse bienestar y enriquecerse, han explotado de forma tan persistente y sistemática el planeta Tierra que, como consecuencia, ha comenzado sexta extinción masiva. Exceptuando los meteoros rasantes que han devastado el planeta más o menos cada cien millones de años, la Tierra nunca conoció un ataque tan poderoso como el que está ocurriendo actualmente. Nos dice Wilson: «la tasa de extinción actual es cien veces mayor que la existente antes que los seres humanos aparecieran sobre la Tierra, y se prevé que se multiplicarán por mil por lo menos en los próximos decenios» (pág. 12).
El causante de esta devastación es el ser humano que se ha transformado en una verdadera fuerza geofísica destructora: ha alterado la atmósfera y el clima de la Tierra, ha difundido millares de sustancias químicas tóxicas por el mundo, ha represado casi todos los ríos, ha transformado en arables casi todas las tierras, que hoy están en buena parte desertificadas, y nos encontramos a punto de agotar el agua potable.
Sabemos que es la biodiversidad -especialmente los microorganismos, bacterias, hongos, pequeños invertebrados e insectos- quien garantiza las condiciones para que nuestra vida humana pueda continuar. Nosotros dependemos totalmente de ellos. Si continúa nuestra práctica biocida, a partir de mediados de este siglo nuestra propia especie comenzará a ser diezmada. ¿No estará en la lista de las condenadas a extinguirse? Esta vez no se puede esperar diez millones de años para que la Tierra recupere su equilibrio perdido. Tenemos que ayudarla, de lo contrario Gaia nos expulsará como un cuerpo letal.
En este contexto Wilson propone una Una Alianza por la Vida. Convoca a las dos fuerzas que para él son las más poderosas del mundo: la ciencia y la religión. Su libro es en realidad una carta abierta a un pastor evangélico, invitándole a sumar fuerzas, a desmontar prejuicios, a construir valores que puedan salvar la vida. Wilson se confiesa no-creyente, digamos un ateo, pero habla siempre con reverencia de Dios. Llama a la puerta de la Iglesia para pedir socorro. Ante un peligro planetario las diferencias desaparecen: esta vez creyentes y no creyentes tendrán el mismo destino. Pero ambos pueden trabajar juntos, porque «los que hoy viven en la Tierra tienen que vencer la carrera contra la extinción de las especies o, si no, serán derrotados, derrotados para siempre; conquistarán honra o deshora eterna».
Ciencia y religión deben cambiar. La ciencia, hasta hoy, no ha respetado la alteridad de los seres. Se colocó encima, dominándolos. La religión todavía no se ha librado de su fundamentalismo en la lectura de los textos sagrados. Manteniendo su fe puede reconocer la evolución de las especies. Ella aporta la reverencia ante la grandeur del universo y el respeto ante todas las formas de vida. Esta actitud convierte el poder en protección y cuidado. Y esta alianza sagrada podrá salvar la vida amenazada.

If anyone can seriously inform us about the state of life on Earth, especially from the perspective of global warming, it is Edward O. Wilson (*1929), one of the pre-eminent living biologists, who introduced the word biodiversity. His book, The Creation: Let Us Save Life on Earth, (La Creación: salvemos la vida en la Tierra, Kazt Editores, 2007), is a call of concern, I dare say even a desperate call, for us to make enormous and collective efforts to save us from the crisis that we ourselves have created. The Earth, in her long history, has seen 5 great extinctions, most recently at the end of the Mesozoic era (that of the reptiles), some 65 million years ago, when all the dinosaurs disappeared. It gave way to the Cenozoic era (ours, the era of mammals.) Between one extinction and the next, it took the Earth ten million years to regenerate.
According to Wilson, in recent centuries, human beings, in their desire to secure well-being and wealth for themselves, have exploited planet Earth in such a persistent and systematic way that, as a consequence, the sixth massive extinction has began. Except for low flying meteors that have devastated the planet more or less every one hundred million years, the Earth has never known such a powerful attack as the one that is happening right now. Wilson writes: «the present rate of extinction is one hundred times greater than the one existing before human beings appeared on Earth, and it is likely that it will increase at least a thousand-fold in the next decades.» (page 12).
The human being, transformed into a true destructive geo-physic force, is responsible for this devastation. Humans have altered the atmosphere and climate of the Earth, spread thousands of toxic chemical substances throughout the world, dammed the waters of almost all the rivers, transformed most of the earth into arable land, that is now mostly deserts; and we are about to use up all the potable water.
We know that biodiversity - especially among micro-organisms, germs, fungi, small invertebrates and insects - guarantees the conditions for human life to continue. We totally depend on them. If our practice of bio-cide continues, by the middle of this century our own species will start to be decimated. Will we not be on the list of species condemned to extinction? This time we cannot wait ten million years for the Earth to recuperate her lost equilibrium. We must help her. Otherwise Gaia will reject us as a lethal body.
In this context, Wilson proposes An Alliance for Life. He calls upon the two forces that are to him the most powerful in the world: science and religion. His book is in reality an open letter to an Evangelical pastor, inviting him to join forces, to set aside prejudices, to build values that can save life. Wilson calls himself a non-believer, let us say, an atheist, but he always speaks of God with reverence. He is knocking at the door of the Church to ask for help. Faced with planetary danger, differences disappear. This time believers and non-believers will have the same destiny. But they can work together, because «all those who now live on the Earth must win the race against the extinction of the species, or they will be defeated, defeated for ever: they will either conquer eternal honor, or dishonor.»
Science and religion must change. Science, up to now, has not respected the otherness of beings. It has placed itself above them, dominating them. Religion has not freed herself from her fundamentalism in reading the sacred texts. She can maintain her faith and still recognize the evolution of species. She brings reverence to the grandeur of the universe and respect for all forms of life. This attitude turns power into protection and care. And this sacred alliance can save us from the threat to life.
